Dana Ives’ upcoming EP is a record that challenges the traditional values of the American hero, and both the suffering and freedom that entail. In particular, the songs focus on media icons such as John Wayne and the ways that rejecting stereotypical notions of manhood allows them to reflect on topics of manic personality, love and what it means to be a man. Songs like “Climbing & Clambering” feature angst-soaked vocals and soulful horns that reflect the lyrical themes of longing in love. As the album progresses, our hero grapples with the ways that John Wayne’s brand of toxic masculinity has only failed him in his quest for self-acceptance and love.
